Apple Pickin' Season
It’s apple pickin’ season! Thankfully, Harrisonburg has a great orchard to visit this weekend with your friends or family. Showalter’s Orchard and Greenhouse is open from 9 – 5 p.m. every weekend, and encourages locals to pick their own apples, choosing from over 26 varieties.
I know after a long, hard week of classes, I want nothing more than to slip on my boots, grab my roommates and go apple picking. Along with an open orchard to pick apples from, Showalter’s also has a greenhouse where a wide variety of annuals and perennials are housed. Hardy vegetables like tomatoes, peppers and squash are available to start a garden. There are also pumpkins, gourds and even pansies perfect for the fall weather.
On the website, Showalter’s lists specific apples available on the weekend you choose to go. This weekend, travel to the orchard and enjoy spending a couple hours picking stayman and rome apples. Stayman apples are known for having a distinctive tart flavor and a bright, crimson color. Rome apples are mildly sweet and are perfect for baking pies, preparing pancakes or slicing them up for salads.
Making an appearance at the orchard this weekend will be the Flavor Savor BBQ food truck. This food truck is a local to Harrisonburg, and can be a tasty treat to accompany you while you pick some apples or some pumpkins.
This weekend I’ll be driving to Showalter’s Orchard and Greenhouse to pick as many apples as I can fit in a bag, eat a good ol’ BBQ sandwich and relieve some stress all the while.
