Turkey Day Dinner at Record Low in Va.

Thanksgiving is a time for eating great food with great people. However, this year’s Turkey Day meal doesn’t have to cost you an arm and a leg! The Virginia Farm Bureau just announced that the average Virginia Thanksgiving costs are down this year by $1.93. For 20-somethings on a budget, this is great news for us. For some, this may be the first Thanksgiving dinner being prepared alone, and it’s important to consider how to be a savvy holiday cook.

Thanksgiving dinner this year will come to less than $50 for a 10 person dinner (the first time the cost of dinner has been under $50 in 30 years), which means only around $5 dollars per person! While this dinner price may seem too low to include all of your favorite holiday dishes, this price includes: turkey, sweet potatoes, pie shells, green beans, pumpkin filling, stuffing, rolls and more.

Virginia’s livestock prices are also down this year, which means a better deal on a turkey. While shopping around, make sure to look for local Virginia turkeys to get the benefits of the low cost livestock season. But don’t just stop with local turkey. Thanksgiving is a great time of the year to give back to the local economy and famers by choosing to pick local produce to put on your table. Famers Markets all around Virginia are a perfect place to start to look.

VA Weekender encourages you to enjoy your holiday by keeping your dinner costs low, and your food local!
