The Healthiest Thing you'll do on Turkey Day
Thanksgiving isn't the healthiest of holidays, but you can still incorporate some physical activity besides getting up and down from the dinner table for seconds (and thirds...).
Turkey trots combine just enough fitness with a lot of fun to kickoff your Thanksgiving Day. Here are some trots in cities all around Virginia:
-Harrisonburg, Va. Rocktown Turkey Trot: Located in downtown H'burg, this 4 mile run/walk features a pumpkin pie station along the route (just like a water station, but yummier!) as well as a Kids Dash, a turkey pardoning and other Thanksgiving pomp and circumstance. There isn't any race day signup, so signup now or at packet pickup on Nov. 25 for a $10 price increase.
-Virginia Beach, Va. Tidewater Striders 38th Annual Turkey Trot 10K & 1 Mile: If you're feeling ambitious Thanksgiving morning, run this 6.2 miler which will definitely make some room in your stomach for turkey and mashed potatoes. The event takes place at Mt. Trashmore YMCA and registration through Wednesday is $25; race day registartion is $30. Race T-shirts for all!
There's also a Turkey Trot 5K in Sandbridge benefitting The Navy SEAL Foundation and the Noblemen of Virginia Beach; a less intimidating distance for those who haven't kept up their mileage.
-Richmond, Va. Turkey Trot 10K: A hilly 6.2 miles around thr University of Richmond. Registration is $40. Also features a FREE kids race! If you're not ready for a 10K, there is a Turkey Trot 5K in Midlothian at Independence Golf Club. A much shorter distance, but just as much fun!
-Arlington, Va. Arlington Turkey Trot 5K: We didn't forget about you, NoVa friends! Online registration is closed, but you can signup onsite at Christ Church of Arlington from noon-8 p.m. on Tueday, Nov. 23, or from noon-6 p.m. on Wednesay, Nov. 24. This race is expected to bring over 4,000 runners which will make for an exciting event.
Wherever in Va. you will be on Turkey Day, get an active start so you can chow down guilt-free on all of your favorite Thanksgiving treats. Happy Holidays, VA Weekenders!!
