Great Grocery Alternatives in the ‘Burg
Benefit the local Harrisonburg economy, support local farmers and get fresh food all at the same time. Harrisonburg offers two great locations(both located downtown and walking distance from the JMU campus) to purchase produce, meats, snacks and specialty items.
Harrisonburg Farmers Market (Tuesday & Saturday 8 a.m. -1 p.m.)
228 S Liberty St, Harrisonburg, VA 22801
This outdoor covered market has a wide variety of vendors who sell all different types of items. Farmers come to sell meats, eggs, cheeses, milk, breads, honey and in season fruits and vegetables. Artisans sell clay made items, jewelry, knit ware and even dog accessories! Other products that may be of interest include flowers, pumpkins and gourdes (perfect for this time of year), bakery items, bath and body products and even fresh doughnuts. Sale of these items directly helps Virginia famers and brings education to the different productions taking place in the area and the importance of buying local.
Friendly City Co-op 150 E. Wolfe St. Harrisonburg, VA 22802
Looking to support local foods all year long? Try the Friendly City Co-op open everyday from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.! If you’re new to the concept of a food co-op, it’s like a regular grocery store, however rather than being chain owned, it’s owned by members. These members ultimately decide what types of products that they want to sell in their co-op. The goal of the Friendly City Co-op is to sell natural, local and organic products. By doing this, they hope to sustain Shenandoah employment and economy. They have similar food products to those at the farmers market (they work with the Harrisonburg Farmers Market and other local organizations), but the also have natural prepackaged snacks and meals available for purchase too. They also have fresh almond butter made in store!
