When you think Virginia hiking, odds are Old Rag Mountain is the first trail that comes to mind, and for good reason. Located just outside of Sperryville, VA, Old Rag offers up one of the best experiences you can find in the Shenandoah National Park.

Upon Arrival at Old Rag you will be greeted by the sight of a plethora of cars and other hikers in the parking lot, ready to embark on their adventure. To avoid the crowds, just follow the old saying “the early bird gets the worm” and try to wake up early. Trust us it’s worth it.

Famous for it rock scramble, Old Rag is a 9 mile endeavor, which will challenge you in many ways typical hiking won’t. Along your journey you will have to use your entire body to hoist yourself over boulders, squeeze through nooks and crannies, and scale down rock walls.

The Old Rag experience is something that all hiking enthusiasts must have if they’re in Virginia. We here at VA Weekender are definitely fans.
