A Little Bit of NoVa History
I'm originally from Northern Virginia, born and raised in the great suburban landscape. However, while from the outside looking in, there may not seem to be many places to explore, as a native Northern Virginian, I have had the chances to discover the best hidden gems. One of my favorite places to go is the Manassas Battlefield Park. I know, you're probably thinking that I'm about to bore you with history facts about a boring battlefield. But here's the thing - Manassas Battlefield is much more than a small slice of NoVa history!
You may remember this battlefield better off as the First Battle of Bull Run and the Second Battle of Bull Run, from your elementary school history lesson days. It was the site of a civil war battle between the Confederacy and the Union. It was actually at this battle that the famous General Thomas J. Jackson earned the nickname "Stonewall" Jackson.
Now, you can travel to Manassas and explore the open land. I've gone many times with friends, just to take a day trip and walk around, all while soaking up a little bit of our nation's history. Manassas Battlefield Park was established as a national park in 1940, and has stayed that way ever since. This battlefield is one of my favorite places to go when I just need to get away from everything. Located in Prince William County, it's got acres of land for you to walk around and clear your mind. There are many historic sites to see as well, such as the Stone House and the New York Monuments.
